Not junior engineers finding their footing, not people being careless. Experienced, thoughtful engineers, fully engaged in the conversation. They’re arguing in good faith. They think they’re reasoning. But ask them why the estimate is what it is, or why this architecture rather than another, and what comes back isn’t a reasoned argument. It’s a feeling dressed as a position.

The absence isn’t knowledge or intelligence. It’s signal.

Everyone who’s read a book about cognitive psychology can name a dozen biases. Confirmation bias. Anchoring. The planning fallacy. The naming doesn’t help. There’s no alarm that fires when you’re inside one. Knowing that confirmation bias exists doesn’t create the real-time awareness needed to catch yourself mid-investigation, narrowing your search toward the hypothesis you already hold.

The research on debiasing is sobering. Training people about biases improves their ability to identify biases in others and in hypothetical scenarios. It does much less to change their behaviour in live situations, under time pressure, when the stakes feel real.1 The problem isn’t information. Signal that arrives after the decision has compounded isn’t useful.

Engineering makes this worse than most fields. The feedback loops are long. You won’t know your estimate was anchored until three weeks later when the deadline arrives. You won’t know the architecture was shaped by familiarity rather than fit until six months in, when the complexity that felt manageable has become the system’s dominant characteristic. By the time you have evidence, the decision is already compounding. It’s expensive to revisit.

This is the first thing worth accepting: you will not debias yourself in real-time. The goal isn’t to be more aware in the moment. The goal is to design process friction at the moments where unawareness is most costly.

Those moments are not randomly distributed.

Cognitive biases cluster where three conditions align: cognitive load is high, information is incomplete, and social pressure is present. In engineering work, all three peak at the same predictable points in the lifecycle. The estimation meeting. The architecture debate. The code review. The incident bridge. These aren’t just stages in a process. They’re the places where the highest-cost decisions are made under exactly the conditions that make bias hardest to catch.

Start with estimation. Most teams know their estimates are consistently optimistic, and most teams keep producing optimistic estimates anyway. The individual engineer sitting in the room often knows from experience that features like this take longer than they feel, and still gives the optimistic number, and believes it while saying it.

Three biases are running in the same direction at once. Anchoring:2 whoever says a number first shapes every subsequent estimate in the room. The adjustment from an anchor is almost always insufficient. Everyone moves toward accuracy, but not far enough. The inside view, which Kahneman called the planning fallacy:3 we estimate this specific task as though it’s unique, rather than drawing on a reference class of similar work. The specific always feels different from the general, which means every estimate feels more favourable than the base rate justifies. And optimism bias trims any upward correction that survives the first two: we weight the good scenario more than the evidence warrants.

The interventions that work address the conditions, not the biases themselves. Written estimates before group discussion, so no anchor is spoken before everyone has committed a number. Pre-mortems:4 before the project starts, write the story of how it failed. Not to be pessimistic but to recruit the planning fallacy against itself; it’s much easier to construct a vivid failure scenario than to reason from base rates. Reference class: not “how long will this take?” but “how long have similar things actually taken, in this team, in this codebase?”

The architecture debate has a different character. The biases here aren’t compounding toward the same outcome. They’re amplifying each other through a different mechanism.

Complexity bias is the tendency to find sophisticated solutions more convincing than simple ones. It’s particularly acute in technical rooms, where complexity signals competence and simplicity can read as naivety. The engineer who proposes the boring option is implicitly suggesting the problem isn’t interesting enough to deserve an interesting solution. The social cost of that is real. This means that in most architecture discussions, the simple option isn’t seriously rejected. It just doesn’t get seriously considered. It’s crowded out before it’s heard.

The law of the instrument compounds this. An engineer who has spent two years building deep expertise in a particular technology will perceive problems through that lens. This isn’t malice and it isn’t laziness. It’s pattern recognition doing what it does. The problem looks like the right shape for the tool they know best. What they bring to the table is genuine expertise; the distortion is that the match between problem and tool gets evaluated by the person most likely to overestimate it.

These two together produce architecture that is more complex than the problem requires, built from familiar technology, in a room where the social dynamics discouraged the simpler question from being asked seriously. By the time this is visible, it’s usually structural.

Architectural Decision Records help, not because they slow things down but because they require articulating what was not chosen, and why. The absence of a written record of the alternatives means the room doesn’t have to justify the path taken against the path not taken. A deliberate “simplest possible thing” pass before the meeting gives the boring option a formal hearing it might otherwise never get.

Code review is where the social dynamics become the primary mechanism, and where a bias cluster creates a suppression loop.

The halo effect means that work from well-regarded engineers receives proportionally less scrutiny than the risk warrants. This is almost never conscious. The reviewer isn’t thinking “I’ll go easier on this because it’s from someone I respect.” They’re thinking, correctly, that this engineer has good judgment, and that inference is extending too far into the current PR. The result is that the senior engineer’s code gets reviewed less carefully precisely when it should be reviewed most carefully: when their influence is greatest and when a mistake will propagate furthest.

Authority bias closes the loop. When the senior engineer comments in the review thread, the discussion tends to end. The comment is treated as a verdict. This is rational in many cases: the senior engineer usually does have better judgment. But it means that dissent doesn’t surface, even when the dissenter has information the senior engineer doesn’t.

This is where shared information bias becomes the third element. In group discussion, people tend to spend most time on information that everyone already holds.5 The piece of information that only one person knows, often the most critical, often the thing that would change the outcome, gets proportionally less airtime. If that person is junior, and the information contradicts the senior engineer’s comment, authority bias and halo effect together make it very unlikely that information will be heard.

Three biases, one suppression loop. The person most likely to have the relevant dissent is least likely to be heard.

Async-first review culture reduces the real-time authority pressure. When the review happens asynchronously, the senior engineer’s comment can be processed against one’s own analysis rather than in the social context of a live conversation. Round-robin dissent, requiring every reviewer to articulate one plausible failure mode before any approval, makes the dissent structural rather than dependent on individual courage.

Debugging and incident response are the highest-pressure moments, and pressure is what makes the bias combination here so costly.

The availability heuristic6 shapes the hypothesis. Whatever is most cognitively available becomes the starting point, and in a live incident, the most recent deploy is almost always the most available. This is reasonable: recent changes are more likely to be the cause. But “more likely” is not “always,” and the availability heuristic doesn’t do probability. It trades in salience. The investigation starts from the most vivid candidate, not necessarily the most probable one.

Once the hypothesis forms, confirmation bias narrows the investigation to the confirming branch. You look for evidence that the deploy broke it. Evidence that it didn’t is processed as noise, or as something to explain away. Under incident pressure, cognitive load is highest and the window for reconsidering the frame is smallest. The loop is self-reinforcing: high pressure generates narrowed attention, narrowed attention finds confirming evidence, confirming evidence justifies staying in the frame.

The most effective intervention is almost embarrassingly simple: write down the hypothesis before you start investigating, and write down what would disprove it. This single step creates a reference point that’s outside the investigation loop. If fifteen minutes pass and the disconfirming evidence hasn’t come, the written hypothesis is a visible flag that the frame may need to change. Timeboxed pivots: if not confirmed in N minutes, generate a second independent hypothesis and investigate it in parallel. Give the disconfirmation a forcing function.

Blameless retrospectives have a related purpose. When the retrospective is structured around narrative rather than blame, the failure chain gets documented as it actually occurred, not as the post-hoc story that survivorship bias and social pressure would produce. That documentation is what lets teams learn rather than rehearse reassurance.

None of this requires memorising a taxonomy of biases. The useful question isn’t which biases do I have. Everyone has all of them; that’s what makes them biases rather than idiosyncrasies. The useful question is: which of these moments does our process have friction for, and which ones does it leave open?

Most engineering processes were designed for technical constraints: deployment safety, test coverage, code quality. This is appropriate. What’s less common is a process designed with both technical and cognitive constraints in mind. The two aren’t in competition. They operate on different parts of the problem. But most teams audit their technical process regularly and audit their cognitive failure modes almost never.

The audit starts with recognising that the moments above are not generic risk areas. They’re specific conditions, and the biases that fire in them are predictable. The engineer who anchors in estimation isn’t uniquely susceptible to anchoring. They’re responding to a social context that makes anchoring very likely, in a meeting format that does almost nothing to counteract it. Change the format and the anchoring drops. The bias doesn’t go away. It just doesn’t have the conditions it needs.

A brief note on AI tools, since they’re now part of how most of these moments run. The same biases apply, and some of them amplify. Anchoring gets stronger when an AI model produces an estimate first. The number feels authoritative in a way a colleague’s number doesn’t. Automation complacency in debugging means the AI-generated hypothesis gets less scrutiny than a human-generated one, even when there’s no reason to believe it’s more accurate. If you’re interested in that specific territory, I wrote about it at length in the piece on automation bias.

The engineers I’ve watched make those calls aren’t going to develop a new real-time self-awareness that flags the moment a bias fires. That’s not how cognition works. But if the estimation meeting doesn’t allow verbal anchoring, if the architecture decision requires a written record of what wasn’t chosen, if the code review happens asynchronously rather than in a live social context, those engineers don’t need the signal. The process provides the friction instead.

That’s a more honest goal than awareness. And a more achievable one.

What started as a mission to turn education payments into something as easy as setting up your Hotstar–Netflix subscription had a big year in 2025.

As of December 2025, Jodo works with 5,000+ institutes across India — schools, colleges, universities, coaching centres, and even personal coaches who run their business from WhatsApp.

And if 2025 is any sign, this education dhurandhar is only warming up.

So here’s a quick rewind of the year — what worked, what surprised us, what we learned, and why we’re more excited than ever.

Why 2025 was a turning point

Let’s be honest, education payments are messy.

Education fees are never one-time. They’re made up of multiple components — recurring and one-off, fixed and variable. Fees change mid-year, discounts and scholarships kick in, refunds follow, and instalment payments come in — often tracked through nothing more than a UPI screenshot from weeks ago.

Now imagine solving that at scale.

That’s been Jodo’s life for years. And to make it work, we had to obsess over the boring stuff:

Auto-debits that don’t randomly fail

Reconciliation that doesn’t involve 12 Excel sheets

Collections that happen on time, without daily follow-ups

By 2025, all that effort started showing results.

Institutes weren’t just collecting fees anymore — they were predicting cash flows, reducing follow-ups, and sleeping better during fee season.

For many of them, fee collection went from daily headache to a background system that just works.

Scale & Impact

2025 was also the year Jodo scaled — quietly at first, and then decisively.

We expanded both locally and globally, helping institutes of every size modernise how they collect fees. On one end of the spectrum, Jodo enabled small schools in towns like Aurangabad, Bishambharpur, and Ballari to move away from manual follow-ups and spreadsheets.

On the other hand, we supported IITs and leading institutions in collecting fees seamlessly from international students across geographies.

Some standout moments:

Medical courses with fees touching ₹1 crore, smoothly collected in instalments using Jodo Flex

Individual coaches scaling faster because payments stopped being a bottleneck

Exclusive: From personal coaching to a ₹10 Cr brand — how Flex helped one of India’s top life coaches scale

Enabled fee payments for 2M+ students across 5,000+ institutes, making education more accessible without compromising on collection efficiency.

Jodo Flex, in particular, saw strong adoption across high-value, long-duration programs. The insight was clear: flexibility wasn’t a nice-to-have feature anymore — it had become a fundamental requirement.

Events like DIDAC 2025 made this real.

Speaking to thousands of education leaders from across the country and hearing how Flex have helped them, gave us both confidence and fuel.

And just when things seemed to be settling into a rhythm, the plot twist arrived.

Product launch: Collect

We realised the problems we’d been solving weren’t “education problems” at all. They were recurring payment problems. Missed EMIs. Failed mandates. Manual reminders. Reconciliation chaos.

Education just happened to be the toughest training ground.

That insight led to the launch of Collect in September 2025.

Collect wasn’t a pivot — it was an unlock.

Everything we had built for schools and colleges worked just as well for:

Jewellers running gold savings schemes

Mobile & electronics retailers offering EMIs

Freelancers and agencies collecting monthly retainers

Microfinance, co-operative societies, and small businesses managing recurring payments on WhatsApp

Within weeks of launch, thousands of merchants started using Collect to:

Set up auto-debit via UPI Autopay & eNACH

Eliminate awkward follow-ups

Get paid on time, every time

Same problem. Different industries. Same solution.

Education is still home. 2025 just showed us how far the house could extend.

What 2025 taught us

Launching Collect reinforced something we’d suspected for a while: recurring payments are everywhere — but reliability and trust matter even more outside education.

It reminded us that the problem is big, the stakes are real, and there’s still so much left to build.

So… What now?

2025 wasn’t just about growth. It was about clarity.

Education remains Jodo’s core. But the systems we’ve built — automation, reliability, scale — are now powering recurring payments well beyond classrooms.

If this year taught us anything, it’s this:

Solve one hard problem really well, and it opens doors you didn’t even know existed.

And honestly? We’re just getting started.

1. Delayed fee collection

Campus management systems sends reminders but cannot:

Retry failed payments

Automate monthly debits

Reduce friction at checkout

2. Manual reconciliation

Finance teams still do:

Bank statement matching

Manual ledger updates

Correcting duplicate entries

Campus management system solutions provide dashboards, but reconciliation is not automated.

3. Limited payment flexibility

Most campus management system payment modules allow only:

UPI

Card

Net banking

They lack:

Autopay eNACH

Split payments

Why institutions add Jodo to their campus management system

Here’s the real reason thousands of schools and colleges pair CMS + Jodo:

1. Automated fee collection

One-click pay

EMI plans

Transparent reminders

4. Lower costs

Lower transaction fees

Lower chargebacks

No hidden campus management system gateway commissions

Real example — How one school fixed fee collection with CMS + Jodo

A premium school in Maharashtra used a top campus management system provider for five years. But their finance team still struggled with: ₹20 lakh/month stuck in pending payments, 5–7 days lost to manual reconciliation, as parents pushed for EMI flexibility.

After implementing Jodo Flex:

Monthly fee collection became 100% digital

Manual reconciliation was fully eliminated with custom dashboards

Staff workload dropped significantly as Jodo handled follow-ups

Parents stopped visiting the campus every month thanks to flexible instalment and automated fee payment options

Over ₹3.5 crore collected smoothly and on time

Why campus management system + Jodo is the future

The future model for campuses is:

Campus management system = academics + admin
Jodo = finance + fee automation

Institutions that combine both experience:

40–70% reduction in admin workload

20–30% increase in on-time fee collection

Zero errors in reconciliation

Significant parent satisfaction lift

From fee collection and attendance to examinations, academics, transport, communication, and compliance — schools, colleges, and universities juggle dozens of administrative tasks every day.

A Campus Management System (CMS) solves this problem by centralising all academic and administrative functions into an integrated digital platform. But with 100+ products in the market, choosing the right one can be overwhelming.

This guide simplifies that decision.

You’ll learn:

What a campus management system really does

The must-have features in 2026

Benefits for admin, finance, teachers, and parents

The 7 best Campus management systems

How to choose the right platform for your institution

Let’s get started.

What is a campus management system?

A campus management system is software that helps schools, colleges, universities, and coaching institutes manage their operations digitally. It automates processes such as:

Student admissions

Fee collection & financial management

Timetabling

Attendance & academics

Transport & hostel

Exam & report card generation

Communication with parents/students

Staff management and payroll

Think of it as the ERP of the education world.

Why a campus management system is crucial in 2026

Institutions face several challenges:

Fee collection delays and reconciliation issues

Manual data entry causing errors

Multiple systems that don’t talk to each other

Lack of real-time visibility

Parent dissatisfaction due to lack of transparency

A campus management system solves all of these by:

Automating workflows

Consolidating data

Offering dashboards for decision-making

Improving parent engagement

Reducing admin workload by 40–60%

I discovered this during my conversation with Vishall Saini from GoNature, whose journey from healing himself to building a 20,000-strong community revealed a pattern I’ve seen across hundreds of coaches—growth brings opportunity, but it also brings administrative chaos that can suffocate the very passion that started it all.

The success trap no one talks about

For most coaching businesses, EMI plans aren’t optional — they’re essential. These are 1–2 year high-ticket programs, often priced ₹50,000, ₹1,00,000 or more, and very few students can pay everything upfront. Monthly instalments or part-payment options make these programs affordable and accessible, allowing more students to join.

At first glance, EMIs looked like the perfect fix. Break a big fee into smaller chunks, and suddenly the dream course feels within reach. Your high-ticket courses are selling well, and with EMIs, you’ve made them even more accessible.

But then reality hits.

“When you have hundreds of students, collection becomes slow,” Vishall told me, reflecting on his early scaling challenges. “You spend more time on calls than coaching.”

This is what I call the Success Trap — the point where your growth becomes your biggest obstacle.

Here’s the double-edged reality of EMIs:

Payment gateway EMIs (credit/debit card EMIs) → Coverage is limited; only a small percentage of customers have eligible pre-approved cards.

Finance/loan EMIs → Most students don’t want loans, approvals are a hassle, and it’s costly for coaches. A 10% flat annual discount can eat into margins, which are actually 30–40% annualized costs, often forcing third-party agencies to collect payments — creating a poor experience if customers discontinue.

Manual monthly collections → Coaches play banker, giving out instalments themselves and chasing payments — an operational nightmare.

Some coaches even tried offering EMIs on their own — but let’s be honest, it’s neither sustainable nor scalable.

“Manual follow-ups slowed operations, and talented team members were spending more time calling customers for payment collection than coaching,” Vishall explained.

Across the industry, it’s the same story: coaches and their teams drowning in spreadsheets instead of scaling their impact.

“Traditional payment gateways work beautifully for small transactions, but they just weren’t designed for coaching businesses with EMIs, high-ticket programs, and long-term commitments,” Vishall added.

The irony is painful: the more successful you become at coaching, the less time you have to actually coach — unless you build a whole team just to reconcile payments.

The trust equation in personal coaching payments

Here’s what most people miss about the coaching industry: it’s built on trust, not transactions.

When a student signs up for a coaching program, they’re not just buying a course—they’re investing in transformation. They’re trusting you with their time, money, and dreams. The payment process either reinforces that trust or erodes it.

When Vishall saw the host of top institutes that Jodo was working with, it gave him the confidence he needed.

Enter the game-changer: Flex

When Vishall discovered Flex, it solved multiple problems simultaneously:

What Flex is: Customers are offered flexible installment options, and they set up a one-time auto-debit via UPI Autopay/eNACH. Monthly payments are then deducted automatically, with prior reminders sent to ensure timely collection.

“What I love about Flex is how simple it is—just set the dates, enter the details once, and the collection happens automatically. The dashboard is crystal clear, showing exactly who’s paid what and when, so there’s no guesswork. And the best part? No more awkward collection calls that could damage trust with my students.”

But here’s the deeper truth: Flex didn’t just solve fee collection-it restored the coaching relationship to its natural state. Coaches coach, students learn, and money flows seamlessly in the background.

How Flex works for coaches

With Flex, coaches can offer installment options directly during their workshops. Pre-configured plans like 6, 9, or 12 months make it easy for students to choose what works for them.

If a customer isn’t paying upfront, they can simply go to the link, set up the auto-debit via UPI Autopay/eNACH in minutes, and that’s it — no documentation, no delays.

This approach allows coaches to close sales instantly, rather than waiting for a pre-approved card or a loan approval.

In fact, this is the trend we have observed with some of the top coaching programs it works with: faster enrollments, smoother collections, and happier students.

The 1% philosophy: Low-Cost, High-Value collections with a human touch

In a price-sensitive market like India, it’s easy to get caught up chasing the lowest transaction fees. But as Vishall explains, peace of mind often matters more than a few saved paise.

“Flex deducts only 1%,” he said. “It may not be the absolute cheapest, but it offers something far more valuable — reliability. Several providers offered lower or fixed pricing, yet none matched the smoothness of our payment collections with Flex. There’s no question of considering alternatives.”

For Vishall and his team, the math is simple — receiving 95% of fees on time while paying just 1% in transaction charges is a no-brainer. And this sentiment echoes across thousands of education providers and personal coaches using Flex.

The real cost isn’t in the percentage; it’s in the hours lost troubleshooting payments, the stress of chasing EMIs, and the missed opportunities to focus on what truly matters: creating impact.

At the same time, automation hasn’t erased the human connection — it’s strengthened it.
As Vishall puts it, “The customer is happy, we are happy, and the game is on.” By taking awkward money conversations out of the equation, Flex ensures every interaction stays focused on learning, not fee collection.

The path forward for Indian coaches

As coaching demand skyrockets in India, the coaches who thrive will be those who recognize that:

Time spent chasing payments is time stolen from transformation.

Systems that automate collection free you to focus on coaching.

The best way to scale is to get customers, offer flexible installment options at will, and collect easily — all while paying a low transaction cost.

The choice is clear: you can keep firefighting with manual systems, or embrace automation before chaos takes over.

Bottom line: In India’s coaching revolution, winners won’t just be those with great content— they’ll be the ones who have streamlined their processes with automation, like Flex, and can scale their impact without scaling their stress.

Vishall’s journey shows the way forward. The question is: what are you waiting for?

Fast forward to 2025, and that same person has built a thriving coaching business with nearly 20,000 community members worldwide.

This isn’t just another success story—it’s a window into India’s personal coaching revolution, where traditional boundaries between teacher and student, offline and online, ancient wisdom and modern delivery are being rewritten entirely.

I recently sat down with Vishall Saini, founder of GoNature, to understand what’s really happening beneath the surface of India’s booming coaching industry. What emerged was a fascinating portrait of an economy built on trust, transformation, and human connections.

When crisis becomes calling

📸 In the picture: Vishall Saini

“I searched online, experimented, and discovered naturopathy,” Vishall tells me, reflecting on those painful early days. “Accidentally, just while healing myself, I found my real calling.”

There’s something profoundly Indian about this story—the idea that personal struggle can become universal service. Vishall’s journey from patient to practitioner mirrors what’s happening across the country: ordinary people are discovering they have extraordinary knowledge to share.

By 2014, he had established his first clinic, working entirely offline. Then came 2020.

“Before COVID, my work was offline and the growth was slow,” he admits. “But once the lockdowns hit, people moved online—to Google, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube. That completely changed my momentum.”

The pandemic didn’t just accelerate digital adoption; it fundamentally altered how Indians think about learning, healing, and personal development.

Beyond medicine: The philosophy of natural transformation

What strikes me most about Vishall’s approach isn’t just the natural healing—it’s his philosophical stance toward existing systems.

“We truly respect all forms of medicine—Ayurveda, homeopathy, allopathy, everything,” he explains. “But the truth is, lifestyle change is the foundation. If you fix your diet and habits, most diseases can be reversed naturally.”

This isn’t anti-establishment rhetoric; it’s complementary thinking. And perhaps that’s what makes Indian coaching unique—it doesn’t seek to destroy existing systems but to fill the gaps they leave behind.

Consider this sobering statistic Vishall shares: globally, iatrogenic deaths (caused by medical treatment) rank as the third leading cause of death. “If those were tracked in India,” he notes, “the numbers would be shocking.”

It’s not about replacing doctors; it’s about empowering individuals to take charge of their own wellness journey.

The COVID effect: When everyone became a student

The pandemic created what I like to call “The Great Democratization of Learning.” Suddenly, your yoga teacher, nutritionist, and business mentor were all available through the same device you used for Netflix.

But here’s where it gets interesting—not everyone thrived in this new landscape.

“Many promised big results but couldn’t deliver,” Vishall observes. “Some lacked strong content or the ability to stand out from competition. Sustainability came only to those who had genuine value to share.”

The coaching boom also created its first casualties. The market quickly separated the wheat from the chaff, and what emerged was a crucial insight: authenticity beats everything and only a few were able to generate real tangible outcomes for their end customers

“This industry is not for everyone,” Vishall says with the confidence of someone who’s seen both sides. “Only coaches with real results, strong content, and a human-to-human connection survive. The real power lies in community.”

Today, his GoNature community buzzes with daily engagement—people sharing victories, asking questions, supporting each other’s journeys. It’s less like a course and more like a movement.

The Master Coach phenomenon

Perhaps the most fascinating development in India’s coaching ecosystem is the emergence of what I call “Master Coaches”—practitioners who don’t just teach their subject but mentor others to become successful coaches themselves.

When I ask Vishall about this meta-layer of coaching, his response is refreshingly honest: “In the coaching world, this is the business of knowledge. I have certain knowledge, but to monetize it, I needed a mentor. Without guidance, I would have been lost.”

He points to Siddharth Rajsekar, founder of Internet Lifestyle Hub, as a pivotal figure in this evolution.

📸 In the picture: Vishall Saini and Siddharth Rajsekar

“Back in 2015–16, when nobody knew what this online market even was, he built a community. He doesn’t sell dreams, he shows the path and walks with you, step by step.”

This brings up a crucial point: the best coaches aren’t necessarily those with the most knowledge—they’re the ones who can create the most transformation. And transformation, it turns out, requires more than information.

The Google vs. Guru question

In an age where ChatGPT can write your business plan and YouTube can teach you everything from advanced calculus to traditional cooking, why do people still pay for coaches?

Vishall’s answer is beautifully simple: “We all know how to cook at home, but we still go to restaurants for the experience and the environment.”

Information is abundant; transformation is rare. And transformation requires what technology can’t provide: accountability, encouragement, community, and that indefinable human element we call trust.

“Doctors say diabetes can’t be reversed,” Vishall shares, “but we’ve shown thousands of people bring their sugar levels back to normal. When people see those results, trust is built naturally.”

This is where Indian coaching shines—it’s not just about knowledge transfer; it’s about creating ecosystems where people feel supported, inspired, and accountable.

Looking ahead: The Nalanda renaissance

When I ask Vishall about the future, his eyes light up with genuine excitement.

“This is the future,” he says without hesitation. “Despite the surge of new coaches in recent years, India has barely scratched the surface—less than 1% of the potential market has been tapped.”

He draws a fascinating historical parallel: “India has always been a giver of knowledge. Now the world is trusting us again. Whether it’s ancient practices like breathwork or even someone teaching the flute online to a global audience, Indian coaches are proving their value.”

Like Nalanda’s ancient scholars crossing continents for wisdom, today’s learners traverse digital highways to Indian coaches—same quest, new medium.

The numbers support his optimism. The global coaching market is projected to reach $20 billion by 2025, and India’s share is growing exponentially. But more than the economics, there’s a cultural shift happening—a return to the guru-shishya tradition, reimagined for the digital age.

The bubble question: What could go wrong?

No conversation about a booming industry is complete without addressing potential pitfalls. Vishall is refreshingly candid about the challenges ahead.

“The biggest risk I see is oversupply,” he admits. “Between 2019 and 2020, it felt like magic—you’d spend ₹1 on ads and make ₹5 back, sometimes even ₹70 on ₹2. But as more coaches entered the market, ads got crowded, costs shot up.”

This rapid growth has brought its own challenges—an influx of practitioners who may not fully understand the depth of commitment required to create genuine transformation. It’s a natural growing pain in any industry experiencing explosive expansion.

But Vishall remains optimistic: “The market will clean itself. Over time, only those who are consistent, deliver genuine results, and build trust will survive.”

He predicts a shift away from paid advertising toward word-of-mouth and referral systems. “When a service truly helps someone—a diabetic, a cancer patient, or a professional struggling with performance—they naturally share it with others. That kind of authentic endorsement is priceless.”

The bigger picture

As our conversation winds down, I’m struck by something profound: India’s coaching revolution isn’t just about business or even education—it’s about reclaiming agency.

In a world where traditional institutions often feel distant and impersonal, coaching offers something different: personalized guidance, community support, and the promise that transformation is possible.

Whether it’s a former corporate executive teaching stress management, an entrepreneur teaching homemakers to start a cooking / baking business online, or someone like Vishall turning personal healing into a mission—these coaches are filling gaps that formal systems leave behind.

They’re not replacing universities or skilling centres; they’re creating bridges between ancient wisdom and modern needs, between individual struggles and collective solutions.

This leading Maharashtra-based coaching institute has built a reputation for academic excellence and large-scale competitive test prep. With thousands of students enrolling across programs each year, managing fee collection had become a critical operational challenge - especially with multiple fee components and payment modes.

Institute’s fee collection challenge

The institution’s fee structure was complex where different fee components (such as tuition, exam fees, transport, and extracurriculars) had to be credited to different bank accounts. To make matters more complicated, the fee structure was not uniform across different grades, with each mapped to separate accounts.

To manage this, the institute used multiple QR codes, each corresponding to a specific combination of grade and fee type. This created a fragmented and error-prone experience:

Parents had to scan multiple QR codes - one for each fee component and grade combination. In a single visit, a parent had to complete 3 to 4 separate transactions.

Many parents, trying to simplify the process, combined payments into one transaction. But because the system couldn’t intelligently split and route the payment, this led to misrouted funds.

The accounts team spent hours reconciling these mismatches - cross-checking Excel sheets, following up with parents for payment breakdowns, and manually fixing errors.

The result was delayed collections, frustrated parents, and a major operational burden.

How did Jodo solve the problem?

To address the challenge outlined above, the institute partnered with Jodo, whose fee management system is designed to seamlessly handle the complexities of routing payments across multiple institute accounts. In this case, the institute leveraged Jodo’s smart QR and Payment Page workflow to simplify fee collection.

1. Unified payment interface

Instead of juggling multiple QR codes and instructions, each parent now receives a single QR / link which opens up to a payment page. This page lists every applicable fee—whether it’s tuition, hostel, library, or extracurriculars—based on the student’s grade and program.
No guesswork. No missed components. Just one page, one payment.

2. Automated routing to the right accounts

Behind the scenes, Jodo’s system uses smart logic to route each fee item to the correct bank account. Whether a Grade 10 tuition fee needs to go to Account A, and a Grade 12 exam fee to Account B - Jodo handles it automatically.
This removed the need for manual intervention, reduced financial errors, and eliminated reconciliation nightmares for the finance team.

3. Real-time tracking and instant reconciliation

Every transaction is auto-tagged to the correct student, with payment status visible in real time via Jodo’s dashboard.
No more waiting for bank statements, cross-checking Excel files, or following up with parents. The finance team now receives instant, consolidated settlement reports - allowing them to shift focus from mundane operational tasks.

4. Frictionless experience for parents

Jodo made the fee payment process faster and easier for families. Most parents now complete payments in under two minutes using UPI, net banking, or credit cards - without needing help.
They receive payment receipts instantly, giving both parents and institutes complete transparency and peace of mind.

5. Smooth rollout with strong buy-in

With active support from the accounts and admin teams, the entire transition to Jodo Payment Pages was completed in less than a month. Clear communication was shared with parents through email and WhatsApp, and support was always available for first-time users.

The result? Near-universal adoption, fewer queries, and high satisfaction across all stakeholders.

What changed after Jodo

In just a few months, the institute saw a complete shift in how fees were managed:

80,000+ transactions processed smoothly

₹150 Cr + collected via Jodo with zero routing errors

Significant drop in parent queries and payment confusion

100% of payments correctly routed to the intended account

Finance teams could focus on strategy and growth—not chasing dues

What the team says

“We no longer worry about reconciliation or tracking. Jodo has made fee collection as smooth as it gets - for us and for our parents.”

With Jodo, the institute transformed its back-office operations and delivered a frictionless payment experience for thousands of students and parents - proving that scale and efficiency can go hand-in-hand.

In our last post, we saw how skilling institutes are winning the race against traditional degree colleges. Shorter courses, affordable fees, and job-ready outcomes are pulling in students faster than ever.

But rapid growth brings new challenges. And one of the biggest — yet least discussed — is fee collection.

Why fee collection is so tricky

Unlike degree colleges that run on fixed semesters, skilling institutes:

Admit students year-round (rolling admissions)

Offer short courses lasting weeks or months

Depend on predictable cash flow to pay trainers and run operations

This model makes traditional, upfront fee collection difficult. Here’s what usually goes wrong:

Upfront fees are a barrier

Students often hesitate to pay the full fee at once. Lost admissions = lost revenue.

Flexibility is expected

Parents and professionals ask for installments, EMIs, or pay-as-you-learn models. Without them, many drop off.

Manual tracking breaks down

Excel sheets, registers, and WhatsApp reminders → missed payments and delayed collections.

Note: Jodo’s Fee management system makes payment reconciliation a breeze!

Admin overload

Staff spend hours chasing fees instead of improving student experience.

The ripple effect on growth

When fee collection isn’t smooth, the entire institute feels it:

Lower admissions (upfront costs scare students away)

Cash flow uncertainty (hard to pay salaries or expand programs)

Burnt-out admin teams

A poorer student experience

In short: fee collection can make or break scale.

For decades, Indian families placed immense faith in a college degree, viewing it as the surest path to a good job. Parents would invest lakhs in traditional colleges, hoping their children would secure stable careers — and by extension, secure lives. In many households, a degree was considered essential not only for employment, but also for eligibility.

But today, things are changing. Students and parents are asking tough questions:

Is a college degree enough to get a job?

Why do so many graduates remain unemployed despite spending so much on fees?

Are there better, faster, and more practical alternatives?

The truth is: many degree colleges haven’t kept up with industry needs. Students graduate with outdated knowledge, while employers look for job-ready skills.

The rise of skilling institutes

This gap gave birth to skilling institutes—training centres that focus on one thing: helping students get practical, job-ready skills.

Unlike traditional colleges, skilling institutes:

Teach only what’s relevant for today’s jobs

Offer short, affordable programs (from a few weeks to a year)

Provide placement assistance or help students earn independently

From coding and AI to finance, design, digital marketing, and even culinary arts—skilling institutes are growing fast.

What makes them even more powerful is their flexibility. These institutes can quickly adapt courses to match changing industry needs, creating faster feedback loops between employers and students.

Setting up a skilling institute has a low barrier to entry—no large campus or extensive licenses required—just good teachers and a relevant curriculum. Fees are largely determined by supply and demand, and students often benefit from easy payment options through platforms like Jodo

Adding to this flexibility, courses can be delivered partially or entirely online, making them accessible to a wider pool of learners. For many, skilling programs serve as a complete education pathway, while for others, they complement a degree with much-needed practical exposure.

Why students prefer skilling institutes

Here’s why skilling institutes are attracting more students:

Shorter Duration: Programs last weeks or months, not 3–4 years.

Affordable Fees: Students spend thousands instead of lakhs.

Direct Path to Jobs: Courses are built with employability in mind.

Flexibility: Many institutes run online or part-time programs.

Simply put: skills = faster jobs, less time wasted.

The often overlooked challenge: Fees

While skilling institutes are gaining popularity because of their updated courses and job-ready training, there’s another area where they are pulling ahead — fee collection.
Traditional colleges often struggle with:

Parents and students asking for flexible payment options (monthly installments, EMIs)

Missed or delayed payments disrupting cash flow

Manual tracking of who paid and who hasn’t

Admissions getting stuck because upfront fees feel like a burden

These challenges may sound operational, but in reality, they can decide whether a student joins or drops off. Skilling institutes have been quick to adapt, offering simple and flexible payment structures that make education feel more accessible.

That’s exactly what Jodo enables: flexible plans, automated reminders, and hassle-free collections that give institutes predictable cash flow while making education accessible for students.

Final word

Education in India is at a turning point. Degree colleges are no longer the only path to success—skilling institutes are shaping the future of jobs

For these institutes to truly scale, three things matter most:

Courses designed with quick industry feedback loops, so students learn what employers actually need

Strong focus on placements, ensuring students see real career outcomes

Flexible and affordable fee payment solutions, making skilling accessible to all

With the right approach, institutes can focus on what matters most—delivering education and building careers—while payments run smoothly in the background.
